Applications
Composites and EMI Shielding
Developers who work with nanofiber paper often use it in a composite lay-up, as one layer in an assembly that is later infused with a polymer.

Nanofiber paper provides high frequency electromagnetic shielding. This graphic shows the high-frequency shielding of a 21-mil thick piece of mesh-reinforced nanofiber paper, with no polymer filler. |

A study of nanocomposite energy damping has appeared: “Damping Augmentation of Nanocomposites Using Carbon Nanofiber Paper”, Jihua Gou, Scott O’Briant et al., Journal of Nanomaterials, Vol 2006, Article ID 32803 (2006).
Fuel Cell Catalyst Support
This graphic shows how the application of a thin nanofiber paper layer can vastly improve performance in fuel cells. The data shows anode performance in methanol fuel cells, comparing a commercial fuel cell electrode (ELAT 2500LT) to the same material modified with two different thicknesses of nanofiber layers. The data (from Notre Dame Univ.) are normalized for catalyst content
Nanofiber Papers with Incorporated Powders
Custom Varieties of nanofiber paper can be fabricated with up to a 50% content of incorporated particulates.
Nanofiber paper made with mesoporous carbon powder makes a powerful electrochemical capacitor electrode.
Ongoing research is examining nanofiber paper made with silicon powder for lithium ion anodes.
